Stratovarius灵云乐队成立于1984年，由三个来自芬兰、赫尔辛基的三个年轻人组成，他们分别是鼓手兼主唱Tuomo Lassila，贝斯手John Vihervaauml以及吉他手Staffan Straaringahlman。在他们正式取名为Stratovarius之前这三人以Black Water的名字对外演出.
1998年4月Stratovarius开始为他们的下一张专辑写歌排练，这是他们的第七张专辑了——“Destiny”，这张专辑与1998年春季和夏季间，在芬兰的Finnvox录音棚录制完成，并于1998年10月5日正式发行。专辑的第一首单曲被做成一张EP名为“SOS”，发行于8月17日，发行后以极快的速度窜上芬兰在EP榜排名第三的位置。更奇怪的是“Destiny”在芬兰的专辑榜已经在星期四爬到了第一的宝座，这还领先于官方发行的速度。
接下来的1999年Stratovarius再次以这张“Destiny”突破20000张的黄金销量，不过这只是个信号，好事情还没真正到来。同年Stratovarius在芬兰金属乐杂志“SFP”中的读者调查中被评为芬兰年度最佳组合，而他们的“SOS”也被评为国内最佳MV，两位Timos被选为“Wondeful
