Rob Thomas出生在德国的一个军事基地，青少年时期经常往返于祖母居住的南加州和母亲居住的佛罗里达州。17岁时，他放弃了高中学业与不正常的家庭生活，靠着搭便车在美国东南部一带流浪，而当时他生活中最重要的爱好就是音乐。Rob Thomas在自己流浪的生涯中，一直带着一盘录音带，里面收录着Al Green、Van Morrison、Elvis Costello、R.E.M等人的歌曲，他用这些音乐来激励自己。在他尚未闯出一片天地之前，经常用写歌来舒缓压力，还加入了当地几个摇滚乐团，参与各种演唱活动。他在奥兰多地区定区后，遇到了有相同音乐理念的鼓手Paul Doucette与贝斯手Brian Yale，三人携手后又遇到在迈阿密录音工作的吉他手Adam Gaynor与在亚特兰大音乐学校就读的吉他手Kyle Cook，Matchbox Twenty终于成立了。
