 崔健版本：歌曲旋律较简单，但起承转合俱全，也很上口；伴奏使用钢琴、慢节奏的击打乐器以及电吉他，配合崔健沙哑平实的嗓音，音乐如同儿子在对着母亲的诉说。诉说中带着普通的的叙述语气，但又饱含深情，似乎有些故事有些隐情与心情含在叙述的背后，让人在思考儿子口中的“草帽”到底是什么，是童年的一件旧物，还是母子之间的情感，还是如同歌词所说是“母亲给儿子的生命”。
