 歌曲来源及背景: 

        每当瓢虫落在孩子们的身上时便会唱"Ladybug, ladybug"。瓢虫驻足爬行，孩子们低声吟唱 （chant）"Ladybug Ladybug fly away home"。黑点红底的瓢虫是英国夏季最常见的昆虫，不过黄色的很少见。当地称为 'ladybirds'。

         瓢虫会降低虫害（pest）灾情是农民常识，按传统焚烧秸秆前则为助瓢虫飞离高声喝唱

         ladybird一词是天主教（Catholic）用词 " Our Lady"引申（derivative）而来的。有一说法是1559年通过《至尊法令》（Act of Supremacy）和《统一法令》（Act of Uniformity）英国国教会确立起来。基督教作为主导地位，歌词中表现的是信奉天主教存在很大的风险。法律禁止（forbade）牧师举行弥撒和出席集会。因此（ Consequently ）只能在郊外秘密开展弥撒活动。法律规定劝说任何人加入天主教都是可以杀头的罪过，而单单信奉天主教的行为也因为将要承受的税负和其他责难也变得极其昂贵，甚至可能带来灭顶之灾。为此同火药阴谋事件相关联。

“火药阴谋”作案人员，从左向右依次为Thomas Bates, Robert Wintour, Christopher Wright, John Wright, Thomas Percy, Guy Fawkes, Robert Catesby and Thomas Wintour。

      估计是Ladybird一词变为Ladybug，美国版的歌词同Firebug关联在一起了，意思是纵火犯（ an arsonist 或pyromaniac）。 1865年出版物中使用ladybug一词，有人推测（ speculation ）同歌词源于1666年的伦敦大火事件。

儿歌中的瓢虫色彩明亮，一般认为会带来好运，1744年见于Tommy Thumb's Pretty Songbook 卷2，此版本为大众传唱版:
